Meet the stylist - Myhomestyle89

April 06, 2019 3 min read

I recently had the opportunity to collaborate with Kate from Myhomestyle89 in a room reveal. The room she designed was so gorgeous! I just love the Sailah Lane wall stickers! Among so many goodies, was the Olli Ella minichari bag from BabyDonkie. Kate and I caught up for a quick chat about her business.

1. Tell me a bit about yourself and your business

I'm Kate, I'm 27. I'm from a small country town in NSW. I've always been interested in interiors and decorating ever since I moved into my first home. I reluctantly (I am a really shy person) started my own Instagram account 'Myhomestyle89' and started uploading some photos of my home.

I was overwhelmed with the response and couldn't believe all the lovely support and connections I made through 'Myhomestyle89'. I discovered so many gorgeous small businesses and now product style regularly. I constantly have to pinch myself that I am lucky enough to work with and be respected by so many brands I've loved and looked up to forever.

2. What made you decide the theme and colours?

For this project the client put their full trust into me and let me style and design the room exactly how I envisioned it. I love bright clean and open spaces. I wanted something paired back, soft, girly and a room that she will love and enjoy for years to come.

3. What looks are you in love with at the moment?

I try not to follow styles or what's 'in'. I pick every piece on my personal style. I've been known to mix contemporary, scandi, modern and boho. I have always been a minimalist as far as interiors go. If I had to pick something I love at the moment it would be quilted bedding, tassels and pom poms!

4. What would be your one main piece of styling advice?

When I give interior advice the clients usually come to me and say my child loves this colour and this particular kids animation. They usually feel like this needs to be a feature everywhere (bedding, prints, cushions etc). Where people find it difficult is pairing all of this back, creating a neutral base and adding the touches of personality in subtle ways so as their child grows these things can change without effort. Add your focal point and main statement piece and build the room around that and those colours. Adding too many harsh colours together will clash and make the room feel non cohesive. I try to pick soft pastel colours, whites and natural timbers as these colours all work together without competing.

5. Five favourite things about this space
I absolutely love the flower wall decals on the wall. I think it's the perfect statement piece for any little girls room! We also have a gorgeous little velvet beanbag in a little corner perfect for reading and relaxing. I also love the bedding, it was a big ticket item but so worth it. The detailing is absolutely amazing.
